Overview

The Corporate Safety Director provides leadership and direction for the Company’s “Work Safe. Live Safe.” Culture. This position reports to the Chief Strategy Officer and will establish departmental goals in alignment with the Company’s goals and objectives. The Corporate Safety Director acts as a role model and demonstrates the Company’s core values, including safety. This position approves hiring both the organization’s regional safety managers and other safety managers as well as the reporting structure and management and collaboration with other corporate support functions and regional leadership teams.

Responsibilities

  • Manages all aspects of the Company Safety Program.
  • Provides safety leadership and technical expertise to regional and corporate management teams.
  • Designs, implements, and continuously improves Company-wide safety strategy, programs, and data tracking platform consistent with industry best practices and Company culture.
  • Defines short- and long-term objectives and goals for the Company, regional safety managers, and all levels of operations management. Provide tactical plans to reach goals.
  • Maintains safety standards and initiatives that improve performance, reduce risk, mitigate incident frequency and severity, and meet regulatory/compliance requirements.
  • Develops and implements safety-related internal controls, oversight, governance, and measurement systems to ensure compliance and accountability across the organization.
  • Oversees the investigation and resolution of OSHA inquiries.
  • Contributes written submissions or otherwise support safety communications through newsletters, social media, new employee orientation sessions, tailgate topics, and similar safety outreach efforts.
  • Develops and maintains an aggressive incident investigation program. This includes review of incident reports and identification of root causes, and completion of corrective actions.
  • Conducts (or coordinates) on-site safety reviews and audits at all locations to ensure compliance with safe working operations, regulatory requirements, and as required by Company policies and procedures.
  • Identifies accident and incident trends Company-wide and by region; implement strategies to effectively resolve actual or perceived safety issues.
  • Provides regular reports and/or presentations to senior leadership on the safety program’s successes and challenges.
  • Acts as corporate contact for any federal, state, or municipal safety or risk management authority and/or personnel, including, but not limited to OSHA and/or DOSH.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Engineering, Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Health or a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) through completion of a program accredited by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), preferred.
  • A minimum of 4+ years of experience leading the safety function of a mid to large sized corporation, preferably in the construction industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise and working knowledge of safety rules and regulations including fall protection, silica, confined space, forklift, and scissor lift operation, trenching, scaffolding, energy control/LOTO and general construction safety.
  • In-depth knowledge of such systems as OSHA, environmental law and health and safety at work State and Federal legislation.
  • Proven leadership and teamwork skills with demonstrated ability to both work collaboratively and influence those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exists.
  • Highly developed interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, implement, and manage best practice health & safety programs.
  • Highly effective presentation and training delivery skills.
  • Frequent, multi-state travel.

Physical Demands

  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, this role may require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand to complete other administrative functions.
  • Drive for long periods of time.
  • Utilize ladders, man lifts or reach booms.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Frequent travel.

Working Environment

  • This role operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.
  • This role operates in active construction and warehouse environments.
  • There may be a variety of weather conditions while on jobsites such as rain, snow, heat.
  • There may be high noise levels while on jobsites.

Salary Range

USD $125,000.00 - USD $175,000.00 /Yr.
